digfone is a video call in the browser with translated captions. You pick your language and the other person's, send a link, and each of you reads the other in your own language while you talk. The person you call installs nothing, creates no account and pays nothing.

How it works

1. 01Choose your two languages. Yours and the other person's, from 60 languages in any pair.
2. 02Send the link wherever you already talk. WhatsApp, WeChat, email. On WhatsApp, one button opens the chat with the link already written.
3. 03They open it and say hello. The link opens in the browser built into WhatsApp or WeChat, without leaving the conversation. Captions appear in each person's language while they speak.

Private by design

Audio and video travel encrypted from one browser to the other and never pass through our servers. When two networks can't connect directly, they go through a third-party relay that forwards the encrypted packets and can't open them. To produce the captions, each browser sends its own audio to a specialised speech recognition service. What can be stored, if your plan keeps history, is the text of the conversation, and there is a switch to turn that off.

Can WhatsApp translate a video call?

The calling features WhatsApp lists include no translation and no captions, so each person hears the other's original voice. With digfone you keep chatting on WhatsApp and send a link that opens a video call with translated captions inside the app.

Does the other person need to install anything?

No. They open the link in the browser they are already using and accept the call. No account.

How many languages?

60, and translation works between any pair of them.

Is the translation spoken out loud?

No. digfone shows captions. You hear the person's own voice and read the translation in your language.

How accurate is the translation?

It can vary with audio quality, accents and context. Speak clearly, and check the transcript at the end for anything important.

Do you record my call?

No, we don't record audio or video. They travel encrypted between the two browsers: directly when the networks allow it, or through a third-party relay that can't open them when they don't.
